Antalgin is useful for relieving pain and reducing fever. This medicine can used to treat headaches, toothaches, and menstrual pain. Antalgin is available in tablet and injection form (injection)

Antalgin contains the active compound metamizole. This compound is also known as methampyrone or dipyrone. Antalgin works by inhibiting the production of the hormone prostaglandin, which is a hormone that triggers inflammation, pain, and fever.

Antalgin is available in several forms, namely Antalgin 500 mg for tablets and kaptabs (caplets), and Antalgin 250 mg/mL for injection drugs.

  • Do not take Antalgin if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use Antalgin concurrently with other analgesic and antipyretic drugs.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had porphyria, kidney problems, liver problems, blood disorders, stomach ulcers, or duodenal ulcers.
  • It is recommended not to drive a vehicle or operate heavy machinery while taking this medicine.
  • If an allergic reaction occurs after using Antalgin, see a doctor immediately.

Dosage and Rules of Use Antalgin

Antalgin is used to relieve pain and reduce fever. The dose of Antalgin is determined based on the age of the patient and the dosage form of the drug. The following is the division of Antalgin dosage:

  • Antalgin tablets

    Mature: 0.5-1 g consumed 3-4 times / day. The maximum dose is 4 g / day with a maximum period of 3-5 days.

    Children > 3 months: Dosage is determined based on body weight. The recommended dose is 8-16 mg/kgBB taken 3-4 times a day.

  • Antalgin injectionan

    Mature: 1 g as much as 4 times / day or 2.5 g as much as 2 times / day. The dose can be adjusted based on the severity of the disease and the patient's response to the drug. The maximum dose is 5 g/day.

    Children > 3 months: Dosage is determined based on body weight.

How to Use Antalgin Correctly

Use Antalgin with meals or after meals. Do not increase or decrease the recommended dose, and do not prolong the duration of drug use.

Interaction of Antalgin with Other Drugs

  • Increased risk of thrombocytopenia, if used with blood thinning drugs.
  • Increased risk of severe hypothermia when used with chlorpromazine and phenothiazine.
  • Increased risk of drug side effects or poisoning when used with trichloroacetic acid, birth control pills, allopurinol and methotrexate.
  • Decreased effectiveness of Antalgin, when used with barbiturates.
  • Increased risk of side effects of diabetes medications, sulfonamide antibiotics, and phenytoin.
  • Decreased effectiveness of ciclosporin.

Side Effects and Dangers of Antalgin

There are several side effects that can occur after the use of drugs containing metamizole, including:

  • Dizzy.
  • Headache.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Anemia.
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension).
  • Decreased white blood cells (leukopenia).

There are also some fatal side effects that can occur, namely anaphylactic shock, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, Lyell syndrome, hemolytic anemia, aplastic anemia, agranulocytosis, and thrombocytopenia. Therefore, always use the drug according to the doctor's advice.
