Amoxillin is a brand of medicine used to treat bacterial infections. Types of infections that can be treated with this drug include urinary tract infections or respiratory infections.
Amoxicillin is an antibiotic in capsule form, containing 500 mg of amoxicillin in each capsule. This medicine is not used to treat infections caused by viruses, such as the common cold or flu.

Warning
- Coughs and colds are most often caused by viral infections, so they don't require antibiotics. Consult a doctor if complaints of cough and cold worsen or symptoms of shortness of breath occur.
- Do not be immunized while using amoxicillin, unless your doctor advises you to do so.
- Before using amoxicillin, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, mononucleosis, rhinitis, and hives.
- Tell your doctor about any medications, supplements or herbal remedies you are currently taking before taking amoxicillin.
- This medicine sometimes causes discoloration of the teeth. Therefore, brush your teeth regularly to prevent this.
- Amoxicillin can block the action of birth control pills. Use another type of contraception while taking amoxicillin.
- Immediately see a doctor if you develop a rash, shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing, or swelling of the face, mouth, hands, and throat after using amoxicillin.
Amoxicillin Dosage
Amoxicillin dosage is different for each patient. The following is the dosage of amoxicillin based on the condition experienced and the age of the patient:
Condition: ear, nose and throat infection
- Children <3 months: 30 mg/kg, divided into 2 times daily.
- Children aged >3 months with a weight <40 kg: 20-45 mg/kg, divided into 2-3 times a day.
- Children aged >3 months with a weight >40 kg: 250-875 mg, 2-3 times a day.
- Mature: 250-875 mg, 2-3 times a day.
Condition: lung infection
- Children <3 months: 30 mg/kg, divided into 2 times daily.
- Children aged >3 months with a weight <40 kg: 40-45 mg/kg, divided into 2-3 times a day.
- Children aged >3 months with a weight >40 kg: 500-875 mg, 2-3 times a day.
- Mature: 500-875 mg, 2-3 times a day.
Condition: skin infection
- Mature: 250-875 mg, 2-3 times a day.
Condition: urinary tract infection
- Mature: 250-875 mg, 2-3 times a day.
Condition: bacterial infection H. pylori
- Mature: 1 gram, 2 times a day, in combination with other drugs.
Amoxicillin Interactions
There are several interactions that can occur, when using amoxicillin together with other drugs, namely:
- Increased risk of bleeding, when used with blood thinning drugs.
- Increased risk of drug allergy, when combined with allopurinol.
- Increased side effects of amoxicillin, when combined with probenecid.
- Decreased effectiveness of amoxicillin, when used with other antibiotics, such as tetracycline, sulfonamidesa, macrolides, or chloramphenicol.
Using Amoxicillin Correctly
Always make sure to read the directions on the medicine package before using amoxicillin.
The dose of amoxicillin is given based on the patient's age, condition, and response to the drug. Amoxicillin is often used every 8 or 12 hours.
Use amoxicillin according to the dose recommended by the doctor. If you forget to take this medicine, take it as soon as you remember if the break with the next schedule is not too close. But if it's close, ignore the missed dose and don't double the dose.
Keep taking amoxillin even though the condition has improved, until the time determined by the doctor. Not finishing antibiotics or stopping antibiotics too early will cause the bacteria to re-infect.
Tell your doctor right away if your condition does not improve or if it gets worse after taking amoxicillin.

A number of side effects that can arise from the use of amoxicillin are:
