Lung Cancer - Symptoms, causes and treatment

Lung cancer is a condition when the cells malignant (cancer) formed in the lungs. This cancer is more experienced by people who have a smoking habit and is one of the three most common types of cancer in Indonesia.

Although it often occurs in smokers, lung cancer can also occur in people who are not smokers, especially in people who are often exposed to chemicals in their work environment or are exposed to cigarette smoke from other people (passive smokers).

Lung Cancer Symptoms

The earlier it is known, the success of treatment is also higher. Unfortunately, lung cancer often causes no symptoms in its early stages. New symptoms appear when the tumor is large enough or the cancer has spread to surrounding tissues and organs. A number of symptoms that can be felt by lung cancer sufferers are:

  • Chronic cough
  • Coughing up blood
  • Drastic weight loss
  • Chest and bone pain
  • Hard to breathe

Lung Cancer Risk Factors

Smoking is the main cause of lung cancer, so most of the sufferers are active smokers. However, people who don't smoke can also get lung cancer.

Other factors that can increase the risk of lung cancer are:

  • Have a family member who also has lung cancer
  • Living or working in an environment contaminated with hazardous chemicals
  • Frequent exposure to air pollution
  • Have you ever had radiotherapy?

Lung Cancer Diagnosis

Lung cancer diagnosis can be made through X-rays, CT scans, and lung tissue biopsies. From these three examinations, the doctor can determine the type and stage of cancer. If needed, a pulmonologist can perform a PET scan to see if the cancer has spread throughout the body.

Lung Cancer Treatment

The main treatment for early stage lung cancer is through surgery. If the cancer has reached an advanced stage, then treatment can be done with radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

In addition, there are several other types of treatment to treat lung cancer, namely targeted therapy, ablation therapy, photodynamic therapy, and cryotherapy.
