Rhinitis - Symptoms, causes and treatment

Rhinitis is inflammation or irritation in layer in the nose, characterized by symptoms of a runny nose, nasal congestion, and sneeze.

Based on the cause, rhinitis can be mild and does not interfere with activities, or severe enough to interfere with sleep or even unable to carry out daily activities. If rhinitis occurs for a long time, complications such as sinusitis, middle ear infection, or nasal polyps can arise.

Causes of Rhinitis

Rhinitis most often occurs due to allergies, for example to pet dander, pollen, smoke, and dust. In addition, infections, medications, and changes in the weather can also cause rhinitis.

Rhinitis Diagnosis

To diagnose rhinitis, the doctor will ask about symptoms and medical history, as well as perform a physical examination. After that, the doctor will do an allergy test to find out whether there are allergies and substances that trigger allergies. If the cause is not an allergy, the doctor will perform other tests, such as binoculars or a CT scan.

Rhinitis Treatment and Prevention

Rhinitis can be treated with irrigation or nasal rinses and over-the-counter cold medications. If it does not improve, it is recommended to consult a doctor. But the most important thing in treating rhinitis is treating the cause and avoiding the triggers.
