Understanding ER Triage Types and Procedures

IGD triage is the process of determining or selecting patients who are prioritized to receive treatment first in the Emergency Room (IGD) of a hospital..

This determination process is carried out to obtain a sequence of treatment according to the patient's emergency level, such as minor injuries, serious injuries that can be life-threatening in minutes and hours, or have died.

Types of ER Triage

In the ED triage system, there are 4 color categories. The four color categories have their respective meanings that are tailored to the patient's condition, namely:

1. Red category

Patients with the red category are the first priority patients (resuscitation area) who need immediate help. The criteria for patients who fall into this category are experiencing a critical condition that requires immediate medical attention.

2. Yellow category

Patients in the yellow category are the second priority (action area) who also need immediate help. However, patients who fall into this category are not in critical condition.

3. Green category

This category is included in the third priority (observation area). Patients in this category generally have minor injuries and are usually able to walk or seek help on their own.

4. Black category

The black category is only for patients who can no longer be helped or have died.

Emergency Patient Triage Procedure

The triage procedure begins when the patient arrives at the Emergency Department. The doctor will immediately conduct a brief and quick examination to determine the patient's condition.

This short and rapid examination includes an examination of general condition, vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, respiration), medical needs, and the possibility of survival. After conducting the examination, the doctor will determine the appropriate triage color category for the patient's condition.

If it is in the red category, the patient will be immediately given medical treatment in the resuscitation room, and if further medical action is required, the patient will be transferred to the operating room or referred to another hospital.

If they are in the yellow category, the patient can be transferred to the observation room. Patients in this category will be treated after the red category patients are finished.

Meanwhile, patients with the green category can be transferred to outpatient care, and if the condition allows the patient to be allowed to go home.

For patients who have died, namely the black category, can be directly transferred to the morgue.

This triage status will be reassessed periodically, because the patient's condition can change at any time. If the patient's condition changes, the doctor will also immediately perform a re-triage (retrieval). For example, a patient who is in the yellow category may shift to the red category when the condition gets worse.
