Methisoprinol is an antiviral drug used to treat herpes simplex, genital warts, and sclerosing pancephalitis. This drug is also known asinosine pranobex or isoprinosine.

Methisoprinol is available in two drug forms, namely tablets and syrup. Each methisoprinol tablet contains 500 mg of methisoprinol, while methisoprinol syrup contains 250 mg of methisoprinol in every 1 teaspoon (5 ml).

The following are general doses of methisoprinol based on the form of the drug and the age of the patient:

Drug form: Tablet

  • Mature: 6–8 tablets per day divided into several consumption schedules.
  • Children: 3-4 tablets per day divided into several consumption schedules.

Drug form: Syrup

  • Mature: 10 ml, 6–8 times per day.
  • child age >7 years or weight >21kg: 5 ml, 6 times per day.
  • Children aged 3–7 years or weighing 14–21 kg: 3.75 ml, 6 times per day.
  • Children aged 1–3 years or weighing 9–14 kg: 2.5 ml, 6 times per day.
  • Children <1 year old or weighing <9 kg: 1.25 ml, 6 times per day.

How to Take Methisoprinol Correctly

Follow the doctor's advice and read the information listed on the drug packaging label before taking methisoprinol. Do not reduce or increase the dose without consulting your doctor first.

Methisoprinol can be taken after meals. Take methisoprinol at the same time every day for maximum results.

Make sure you keep taking methisoprinol until the time limit prescribed by your doctor even though your condition is getting better. This is done to prevent recurrence of infection.

While using this medicine, you may need to have regular blood and urine tests to monitor your body's response to the medicine.

For patients who forget to take methisoprinol, it is recommended to take it immediately if the next consumption schedule is not too close. If it is close, ignore it and do not double the dose.

Store methisoprinol in its package in a cool, dry place and not exposed to direct sunlight. Keep medicine out of reach of children.

Methisoprinol Interaction with Other Drugs

Methisoprinol can cause drug interactions in the form of increasing the concentration of zidovudine if these two drugs are used concurrently.

To prevent drug interactions, before starting treatment with methisoprinol, always tell your doctor about any medications, supplements, or herbal products you are taking.

Methisoprinol Side Effects and Dangers

One of the side effects of using methisoprinol is an increase in uric acid levels in the blood. Have regular check-ups to monitor uric acid levels and assess progress of therapy.
