Coronary Heart Disease - Symptoms, causes and treatment

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a condition when the blood vessels of the heart (coronary arteries) are blocked by fatty deposits. When fat accumulates, the arteries will narrow, and make blood flow to the heart reduced.

Reduced blood flow to the heart will trigger CHD symptoms, such as angina and shortness of breath. If the condition is not treated immediately, the arteries will become completely blocked, and trigger a heart attack.

Coronary arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood to the heart. There are two types of coronary arteries, which both branch from the aorta or large blood vessels, namely:

  1. left main coronary artery (left main coronary artery/LMCA) – This artery functions to drain blood to the left atrium and left ventricle of the heart. LMCA is divided into two parts, namely:

- Left anterior descending (LAD) – serves to drain blood to the front and left of the heart.

- Circumflex (LCX) – serves to circulate blood to the back and outside of the heart.

  1. right coronary artery (right coronary artery/RCA) – This artery supplies blood to the right atrium and right ventricle. In addition, the RCA also supplies blood to the sinoatrial and atrioventricular nodes, which regulate the rhythm of the heart. RCA is divided into right posterior descending and acute marginal artery. Together with the LAD, the RCA also supplies blood to the center of the heart, and the septum (the dividing wall between the right and left ventricles of the heart).

Based on WHO data, coronary heart disease is one of the non-communicable diseases that causes the highest death in the world. In 2015 alone, more than 7 million people died from CHD. While in Indonesia alone, more than 2 million people were affected by CHD in 2013. Of these, CHD is more common in the 45-54 year age range.

In addition, people with CHD are a group of people who are more susceptible to COVID-19 with more severe symptoms. Therefore, if you suffer from this condition and experience symptoms of Corona virus infection, see a doctor immediately. Click the link below so you can be directed to the nearest health facility:
