How to Process Beef Properly and Correctly

Beef is a source of important nutrients for the body. On the other hand, beef can also be a source of fat and bad cholesterol which is bad for health. However, if beef is processed properly, you don't have to worry about the bad effects anymore.

Beef is a source of protein, B vitamins, and various types of minerals, such as phosphorus, selenium, and iron which are important for the body. However, beef is also known to contain various types of fat, especially saturated fat and monounsaturated fat.

The high content of saturated fat in beef can increase levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) in the body and the risk of atherosclerosis, heart disease, and stroke.

Method Properly Using Beef

1. Choose beef

Choose the part of the beef that has less fat, such as hamstrings, quadriceps, ham ( sirloin ), or waist. In addition, choose beef that is red, fresh and clean.

Avoid buying beef that is browned, slimy, or looks dirty. You are also advised to consume real beef, not processed meat such as smoked meat or sausage.

2. Storing beef

Store beef in the refrigerator at 1 degree Celsius or in the freezer at -18 degrees Celsius immediately after buying it. It aims to keep the meat fresh, maintain good nutrition of beef, and extend the shelf life of food.

If stored in the refrigerator, raw beef can only last for 1-2 days, while cooked beef for 3-4 days. However, if stored in the freezer, raw beef can last up to 3-4 months, while cooked beef 2-6 months.

Don't forget to store beef in a clean and tightly closed container. If you want to thaw frozen beef, place it in the refrigerator to prevent bacterial growth.

3. Processing beef

Always wash your hands before and after handling beef, for at least 20 seconds with clean water and soap. Use a different knife and cutting board when handling beef to prevent bacteria from spreading to other ingredients.

It is recommended that you remove the fat from the meat before cooking, especially if you want to make soups or stews. In addition, meat should not be fried before cooking, but processed by roasting or boiling.

If you really want to fry, you can use heart-healthy oils, such as sunflower oil, canola oil, soybean oil, or olive oil.

When cooking beef in the fryer, oven or water, make sure the temperature is at least around 71° Celsius to kill bacteria.

4. Eating beef

  You should balance the consumption of beef with fibrous vegetables. The high fiber content in vegetables is known to reduce cholesterol absorption after consuming beef.

Limit the consumption of beef which is high in iron if you are taking a prescribed iron supplement. This is to prevent excess iron in the blood.
