Regarding surveillance activities, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia through the Decree of the Minister of Health Number HK.01.07/Menkes/413/2020 replaced the old operational terms in handling COVID-19 with several new terms. What are these terms?

The Meaning of Suspect, Probable, Confirm, and Various New Terms in COVID-19

The following are some of the latest terms used by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia in dealing with COVID-19 cases:

1. Suspected case

A person can be called a suspected COVID-19 if they have one or more of the following criteria:

  • Experiencing symptoms of respiratory tract infection (ARI), such as fever or a history of fever with a temperature above 38 degrees Celsius and one of the symptoms of respiratory disease, such as cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, and runny nose
  • Have a history of contact with people belonging to the category probable or have you been confirmed to have COVID-19 in the last 14 days
  • Suffering from a respiratory tract infection (ARI) with severe symptoms and needing to be treated in a hospital without a specific cause

2. Case probable

Case probable is a person who is still in the suspect category and has symptoms of severe ARI, respiratory failure, or has died, but there has been no test result that confirms that he is positive for COVID-19.

To confirm or confirm a case of COVID-19, a person will need to undergo sputum sampling or swab throat.

3. Case confirmation

Confirmed cases of COVID-19 are people who have tested positive for the Corona virus based on the results of laboratory tests in the form of PCR. Confirmation cases can occur in people with symptoms of the Corona virus or people who do not experience symptoms at all.

4. Close contact

Close contact is a condition when someone makes contact with people who fall into the category of confirmation and probable, either direct physical contact, face to face with a distance of less than 1 meter for at least 15 minutes, or caring for people with confirmed status and probable.

5. Travelers

Everyone who travels from an area with a high number of COVID-19 cases, both at home and abroad, within the last 14 days.

6. Discarded

This term is used to describe someone with a suspect status, but the results of the PCR examination show negative results and have been carried out 2 times in a row with an interval of 2 days.

Term discarded also used to describe the condition of a person with close contact status who has completed a 14-day quarantine period.

7. Finish insulation

A person is categorized as complete isolation if he fulfills one of the following conditions:

  • Confirmed to have COVID-19, but without symptoms and has been in self-isolation for 10 days since the PCR test showed a positive result of COVID-19
  • Case probable or confirmation with COVID-19 symptoms that have not been tested for PCR, but have completed self-isolation for 10 days since the first day of symptoms of COVID-19 and have recovered from these symptoms for at least 3 days
  • Case probable or confirmation with COVID-19 symptoms who have undergone 1 examination and the results are negative and do not show symptoms of fever or respiratory problems for at least 3 days

8. Death

Cases of death due to COVID-19 are conditions when people belonging to the probable or confirmed COVID-19 death.
