Although often considered trivial, nosebleeds must be treated quickly. Apart from pressing your nose for a few minutes, you can also use medications, both natural and medical, to relieve nosebleeds.
Nosebleeds are one of the most common types of bleeding experienced by both children and adults. Although nosebleeds are rarely a sign of a serious medical problem, they can be annoying and make you uncomfortable.
Natural Nosebleeds
There are many things that can cause nosebleeds, ranging from blowing your nose too hard, picking your nose too deep, bumps or injuries to your nose, colds, dry air, to allergies.
When you have a nosebleed, you don't have to worry and stay calm. To stop bleeding from the nose, do the following independently:
Cold compress
Compress the bridge of the nose with ice cubes or frozen vegetables wrapped in a cloth. This method is quite effective for stopping bleeding that occurs in the nose.
Remember, never put ice cubes or frozen vegetables directly into the nose as this can cause tissue damage. Make sure the ice cubes or frozen vegetables used for the compress have been wrapped in a cloth or towel first.
Salt water
If the nosebleed is caused by dry air, you can treat it with salt water. Salt water can narrow the flow of blood vessels in the nose so that the bleeding will stop quickly. In addition, salt water can also moisturize the inner lining of the nose and reduce irritation of the nasal membranes.
To treat nosebleeds using salt water, you just need to dissolve the salt in warm water, then spray or rinse your nose with the solution.
Medical Nosebleeds
There are also medical medications you can use to stop nosebleeds. Here are some of them:
Tranexamic acid
One of the drugs that can be used to stop and reduce bleeding due to nosebleeds is tranexamic acid. This drug works by speeding up the process of blood clotting, so that nose bleeding due to nosebleeds can stop.
However, you should not carelessly take this drug and must be in accordance with a doctor's prescription.
Decongestant spray
You can also use nasal sprays that contain decongestants, such as oxymetazoline, to stop nose bleeding due to nosebleeds. However, decongestant sprays are not recommended for long-term use because they can make nosebleeds worse.
For the time being, you should not take blood thinning drugs, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, clopidogrel, and warfarin, unless it is still permitted by the doctor. The reason is, these drugs can cause nosebleeds to get worse and more easily occur.
If the independent treatment and the above nosebleed drugs do not work, or if the nosebleeds occur frequently and last a long time, you should consult a doctor so that further examination and treatment can be carried out.
