Permethrin - Benefits, dosage and side effects

Permethrin is a drug to treat parasitic infections of the skin, such as scabies (scabies) and lice on the scalp. This drug can be used by adults and children aged 2 months and over.

Precautions Before Using Permethrin

Permethrin should not be used carelessly. The following are things to consider before using permethrin:

  • Do not use permethrin if you are allergic to this drug. Always tell the doctor about the history
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had asthma, a skin infection, or have sensitive skin.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, including supplements or herbal products.
  • Do not use permethrin in children under 2 months of age without consulting a doctor first.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy.
  • See your doctor right away if you experience an allergic drug reaction or serious side effect after using permethrin.

Dosage and Instructions for Use of Permethrin

The dose of permethrin is different for each patient. The following is the distribution of permethrin doses based on the patient's condition:

  • Condition: Scabies

    Children over 2 months and adults: Apply 5% cream thinly on the surface of the scalp to the soles of the feet. Leave it for 8–14 hours before rinsing.

  • Condition: Lice in hair

    Children over 6 months and adults: Apply to cleansed and dried hair and scalp. Leave it on for 10 minutes before rinsing. The dose can be repeated 7–10 days later if needed.

How to Use Permethrin Correctly

Use permethrin as directed by your doctor or the directions on the medicine package. Do not stop or increase the time of taking this medication without consulting your doctor first.

Permethrin cream or liquid should only be used on the skin. Remember to always wash your hands, clean the infected area, and dry them before applying cream or liquid permethrin.

Apply permethrin cream from head to toe, including under fingernails and skin folds. Leave it for 8–14 hours. After that, rinse off the permethrin cream with running water when you shower.

Avoid using this medication in the eyes, nose, or mouth. If these areas are accidentally exposed to the drug, clean immediately and rinse under running water. Use permethrin cream regularly to get maximum results.

Before using liquid permethrin, wash your hair with shampoo and rinse with water. Do not use conditioners or shampoos that contain conditioner because the treatment can be ineffective.

Apply liquid permethrin to damp hair. Start with the back of the ears and neck, then apply all over the hair and scalp. After that, let stand for 10 minutes. Rinse hair and scalp using hot water and dry hair with a towel, then comb.

After using permethrin cream or liquid, clean all clothing and towels used during treatment. Use hot water to prevent any attached lice or nits from growing back.

Store permethrin in a place away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.

Permethrin Interactions with Other Drugs

There are no known drug interactions that result when permethrin is used in combination with other types of drugs. However, to prevent unwanted drug interactions, be sure to let your doctor know if you are taking or taking certain medications.

Permethrin Side Effects and Dangers

Some of the side effects that can occur after using permethrin are:

  • Itch
  • Redness and swelling of the skin
  • A stinging burning sensation
  • tingling
