Is it true that the use of Scuba Masks is not effective to ward off the Corona Virus?

Currently, the use of scuba masks is being discussed by the public. The reason is, this type of mask is thought to not be able to protect themselves from the transmission of the Corona virus. Is that right?

Scuba masks are masks made of scuba cloth or neoprene. This cloth mask is widely used by the public because the material is comfortable to breathe and the motifs are various and interesting.

Scuba Masks Can't Fight Corona Virus

Since the outbreak of the Corona virus, the availability of surgical masks has become scarce. If anything, the price is still quite expensive. Therefore, some people choose to buy less expensive non-medical masks, such as scuba masks.

Scuba fabric has many variations. There are thick scuba cloths and some are thin. The scuba cloth that is generally used as a diver's suit is thick and waterproof, so it can protect you from droplets if you use it as a mask.

However, many scuba masks found on the market today are very thin and only consist of 1 layer, so they are not safe enough to be used to protect you from the Corona virus.

The Ministry of Health recommends the public to use cloth masks consisting of 3 layers to protect themselves from the Corona virus. Here are the details:

  • First layer (innermost): hydrophilic fabrics that can absorb water, for example cotton fabrics
  • Second layer: cloth for filtration, may be cotton or polyester
  • Third layer: hydrophobic fabrics that repel water, such as cloth polypropylene

In addition, cloth masks can only be worn for a maximum of 4 hours and must be replaced with new and clean masks. The use of masks must also be appropriate, namely covering the nose and mouth.

With these requirements, of course, scuba masks that are currently being sold do not meet the qualifications. In addition, we can also conclude that masks buff, which are flimsy and made mostly of only cotton fabric, are also as unsafe as scuba masks.

Even so, don't be disappointed if you've already collected scuba masks. You can still use this mask, how come, as long as it is stacked with another mask, yes. Wear a 2-ply cotton cloth mask, then use a scuba mask as the outer layer.

In addition to wearing a mask, you are also advised to wash your hands regularly with soap and running water, keep a distance of at least 2 meters from other people, not touch objects in public places, and maintain your immune system.

Until now, the number of positive cases of COVID-19 is still increasing. Therefore, always obey the existing health protocols because prevention is better than cure.

If you experience symptoms of a fever accompanied by a sore throat, cough, or shortness of breath, especially if in the last 14 days you have had close contact for a long period of time with a person who is positive for the Corona virus, immediately self-isolate and consult a doctor.

For the safety of you and those around you, don't leave the house yet. Instead, you can consult a doctor through chat in the ALODOKTER application. If the doctor feels you need to go to the hospital, you can also make an appointment with the doctor at the hospital through this application.
