Dexanta - Benefits, dosage and side effects

Dexanta is useful for treating symptoms of excess stomach acid, such as nausea, heartburn, stomach pain, heartburn, and bloating. It is also used to treat symptoms due to gastritis, stomach ulcers, or duodenal ulcers.

Dexanta contains aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, and simethicone. Aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide work by decreasing the amount of stomach acid, while simethicone works by breaking down gas bubbles in the stomach.

Types and Content of Dexanta

There are two types of Dexanta products available in Indonesia, namely:

  • Dexanta Chewable Tablets

    Each 1 Dexanta chewable tablet contains 200 mg aluminum hydroxide, 200 mg magnesium hydroxide, and 50 mg simethicone. In 1 box contains 10 strips, 1 strip contains 10 chewable tablets.

  • Dexanta Suspension

    Each 5 ml of Dexanta syrup contains 200 mg of aluminum hydroxide, 200 mg of magnesium hydroxide, and 50 mg of simethicone. In 1 box contains 1 bottle of Dexanta suspension in the size of 100 ml.

Warning Before Taking Dexanta

Pay attention to the following points before taking Dexanta:

  • Do not take Dexanta if you are allergic to aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, or simethicone.
  • Talk to your doctor about using Dexanta if you have or are currently experiencing alcoholism, phenylketonuria, kidney stones, kidney disease, or dehydration.
  • Talk to your doctor about using Dexanta if you are on a low-phosphorus or low-magnesium diet.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking certain medications, supplements, or herbal products.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy.
  • Check with a doctor if symptoms due to high stomach acid do not improve, even though you have been taking Dexanta for more than 1
  • See a doctor immediately if you have an allergic reaction to the drug or an overdose after taking Dexanta.

Dosage and Rules for Use of Dexanta

Below are the general dosages of Dexanta for adult and pediatric patients based on the form of the drug:

Dexantachewable tablet

  • Mature: 1-2 tablets 3-4 times a day.
  • Children aged 6–12 years: 0.5–1 tablet 3-4 times a day.

Dexanta suspension

  • Mature: 1–2 5 ml measuring spoons, 3-4 times a day.

How to Take Dexanta Correctly

Follow the doctor's advice and read the instructions on the packaging when you are going to take Dexanta.

Dexanta chewable tablet form needs to be chewed 1 hour before eating or 2 hours after eating.

Meanwhile, Dexanta suspension form needs to be taken before meals or at bedtime. Shake the bottle, then use a measuring spoon to consume Dexanta in the form of a suspension so that the dose of the drug you take is right.

Dexanta only needs to be consumed as needed. If you forget to take medication, do it immediately if the break with the next schedule of use is not too close. When it is close, ignore and do not double the dose.

Dexanta can affect the body's ability to absorb antibiotics. Avoid taking the drug within 2 hours before or 2 hours after using Dexanta.

Store Dexanta in its packaging in a cool, not humid, and not exposed to direct sunlight. Don't keep Dexanta inside freezer and keep this medicine out of reach of children.

Dexanta Interactions with Other Drugs

The content of aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, and simethicone in Dexanta can cause drug interactions if used with other drugs. Drug interactions that can occur include:

  • Decreased absorption of raltegravir, deferasirox, or penicillamine
  • Decreased effectiveness of phosphate supplements, iron supplements, mesalamine, tetracycline, or quinolones
  • Increased risk of side effects when used with erdafitinib or patiromer
  • Increased levels of aluminum in the body when used with calcium citrate, potassium citrate, or vitamin D

Side Effects and Dangers of Dexanta

There are some side effects that appear after taking drugs containing aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, and simethicone. These side effects include:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Unusual tired
  • Loss of appetite

Check with your doctor if the side effects above don't go away or get worse. Immediately see a doctor if you experience an allergic reaction to the drug, which can be characterized by complaints in the form of an itchy rash on the skin, swelling of the lips or eyelids, or difficulty breathing, after taking Dexanta.
